I saw The Sultan’s Elephant in London 2 years ago and it is still one of the most amazing things I have ever witnessed.  I travelled up to Liverpool for the weekend and met my brother and his family who had come from Manchester.  The way the spider’s legs began to appear around corners was pure genius. We were in Derby Square for the water bombs!  The children were soaked to their underwear, but judging from their squeals and laughter, they didn’t mind.  Two things struck me about this event, as with The Elephant. Firstly, how it brought people together, joined by the sense of awe and wonder and what we were seeing.  Strangers were talking and laughing together, unable to mask their excitement.  Secondly, the whole event felt quite risky and edgy, which contributed to the thrill of it all.  Our lives- and even more so those of our children- have been seriously impoverished in recent years by an obsession with eliminating any real or perceived risk from all activities and experiences.  The sheer numbers of people; the sight of the wheels of the cherry pickers passing only centimetres from our feet; the huge legs of the spider dangling precariously over our heads; the artists jumping from them to stand on traffic lights and the soakings all felt very dangerous, but only added to the delight and what will always be wonderful memories.  The organisers, the Police and other services managed the whole thing with cheerful efficiency.  Well done and Thank you!

We visited Liverpool on Sat afternoon at Castle street, La Princess was Brilliant, the atmosphere was Electric, We stood not far from the Cannons and got absolutly soaked, but it didn’t matter it was all part of the fun and experiance. We returned on Sunday evening for the Farewell party which was spectacular. We have thoroughly enjoyed the Capital of Culture events so far, but nothing can match the weekend of La Princess. Well done to the organisers Money well spent.

We went along with my daughter Carney and her husband Steven, and am I glad we did, what an amazing sight.  It is only when the Spider gets along side of you that you realise the enormity and complex nature of this machine.  It is driven by operators who are perched all over it, some clinging to the outer reaches of the arms (where were the Health & Safety Jobsworths last night?).  It is preceded by a series of cherry-pickers with orchestra members playing in their cradles with loudspeakers strung underneath.
The final approach to the old Queensway (Birkenhead) Tunnel sees a finale of water, snow and fieworks while the music builds to the final farewell as it slips away down the tunnel entrance, incedible piece of theatre.
It should be made an honorary Scouser and kept for special occasions, such as Christmas, when it could be enticed to come out of its’ lair and walk amongst its’ many admirers here in Liverpool. Fantastique! Mercy beaucoup.

WOW, what an wekkend…

Tonight - an excellent night - La Princesse was so graceful, and beautiful. I think tonight, above what I saw yesterday, she really appeared like a spider walking amongst us all.

When she reared up, her front legs in the air on William Brown Street - fantastic. An excellent, excellent show. Everyone involved in this production must be immensely proud.

Excellent also, when the crew all came out and took a bow!

Liverpool and all its people should be so proud that this took place there. Saying that, the Liverpudlians too were great hosts. I reckon there must have been hundreds of thousands there tonight, and yet there was absolutely no trouble, everyone enjoyed it together, and we sailed out of the city, with no trouble at all.

WELL DONE LA MACHINE, AND WELL DONE LIVERPOOL!!!!

I dont know what I’m going to do now, I miss La Princesse already!

She must be lonely in that tunnel.

What a fantastic 3 days, just returned home after saying goodbye to ‘la Princess’. Sorry to see you go, I’ve never seen so many smiling faces in Liverpool City Centre although the little girl, standing next to me was crying because she was so upset that La Princess had disappeared down the tunnel.

Congratulations to everybody who made the event happen the team deserve to be made ‘freemen of the city’

Thank you to La Machine and Liverpool Capital of Culture for giving us such a magical weekend.  My daughter was captivated by the story of La Princesse, though she was a bit worried that the fire effects might hurt the spider!  Congratulations to the ‘Orchestra’ and the production team - it was truly spectacular.

what a privilege to live in this city and be witness to such a spectacle.  Just got back from tonight’s finale.  Have loved every minute and enjoyed the magnificent atmosphere of the crowd. Even my daughter said it was awesome - and she is not easily impressed.  Congratulations La Machine!!!

How fantastic - we drove just over 200 miles to see La Princess and we were absolutely bowled over when we saw her.
It’s hard to put into words exactly how it made us feel, but we will talk about this for a very long time.
The people of Liverpool are special anyway, but it was great that we all had the same thing in common - anticipation and wonder, events like this really do bring out the best in people.
Thank you to the creator, engineers, designers and everyone that was involved in bringing something so wonderful and beyond the imagination to life.
I hope there will be more creations from La Machine.
Thanks again
